At the DL ATL DO later this month some are signed up to go through the FA training simulators and will get to practice opening various types of exits. I hope one will write a good trip report and we will finally get some first hand answers to just this type of question from the pax perspective. ^
The airline crew training simulators look like
This Photo The newer swing up types open rather quickly so you don't want to hold onto them once you pull the handle. The older
Plug Doors are not so obviouse to hold properly to open them safely so you don't hurt yourself. The handles do pull in very easily. They are 45 lbs on mainline and much lighter on RJs but in an emergency the smallest person will likely toss the door as if it's a piece of cardboard.
