I am not so worried if it works in my travels, as I can get a prepaid SIM or use another phone I use for travel.

Google Voice is an excellent way to make international calls. Quality is good, and the rates are amongst the cheapest that you will find. Works best if you have a smartphone with internet access to initiate the call as GV is a "callback" system. You tell GV online what number you want to call, it calls you and then it calls the required number. You can also do it off a non-smartphone, just slightly more complicated.
