The RCA jack, if Red / White / Yellow, are there to allow you plug in the A/V output of your laptop, or other portable movie player (i.e DVD player) to allow you watch a movie via the IFE screen.
If there was no Yellow RCA present, well then the Red / White RCA's are another way of inputting an audio source into the IFE system.
A similar arrangement can be found in more & more hotel rooms these days, where there's usually a panel near the TV, which allows you plug in a media player or games console to view via the TV. The rooms at the Sofitel at T5 would be a good example of this.
I'm currently doing the training for Pursers and CSDs on the new Thales IFE system, so....
The two USB ports in First, Club and WT+ are there for charging USB devices (perfectly ok to leave them plugged in if you are sleeping) and for loading photographs onto the system (JPEG files only). U cannot listen to music or watch a movie via the USB ports...
The RCA ports (phono in the UK), red/white & yellow are in all cabins apart from W/T, and these allow you to connect a video camera, or even your iPod/iPhone (cables available from all good retailers) to the Thales system and then watch your movie on screen via our IFE. In W/T only the yellow plug is available so you can watch your movie on the IFE screen but you must plug your headset into your device to hear the soundtrack.
The current system on our two 777-300s is starting off at a fairly basic level (although vastly superior to AVOD) and will be enhanced once we are sure the system has settled in, is reliable and is consistently producing the performance levels we have been guaranteed.
