And they actually said, unless you're strong enough to really toss the door way the he*l out, that it's actually better to bring it in the plane when exiting. They also said before you open the doors AT ALL - look out the window to check for fire, smoke, water, etc.

I agree with you 100 percent, while I am capable of throwing the hatch outside, my wife is not and I have told her to follow the posted instructions and bring the hatch inside.

My wife and I are both elites on DL, so when we travel we always book the emergency exit rows, and she takes the window seat and I sit next to her. When we travel together I will open the hatch if needed, but when she travels by herself, she has a good mental picture of what to do in an emergency and she is probably more prepared than most of the other passengers sitting in the emergency exit rows because of my coaching her on what to do. I have also made her look at the safety instruction pamphlet so she knows if the airplane is equipped with an emergency exit slide and how to exit the airplane.

You would be surprised as to how few people even bother to read the instructions, even after the FA takes out the instruction pamphlet and asks the passengers to familiarize themselves with the procedures.
