Having just done a BA F RT JFK-LHR and LH FRA-JFK I would take issue on a couple points:
- The FCT dining is really a couple notches above CCR. Just the buffet alone features fresh smoked salmon, an elegant cheese selection, well presented pieced fresh fruit, a really nice selection of cold meats and breakfast breads. Anything ordered in CCR has been above average to pretty good but IMO just not quite there. Both have excellent and attractive bar areas and nice seating areas. CCR can be a bit hard to find seating with powerpoints whereas all the seating areas in FCT do. The big downer in FCT is the obnoxious scratch off card with 26 letter code to access the internet, whereas BA is just click and play. Also edge to the BA cabanas if you score one.
- The seats while be ancient on LH if you have the seat next to you open are actually quite comfortable in the flat position - they feel quite a bit wider and plenty of foot room. I also give an edge to LH meal presentation - caviar plus the three tier appetizer presentation. BA is a bit more hit and miss IMO. Wines on both are excellent. Crews tend to reflect their national cultures with LH being a bit more reserved but LH CSDs having a pronounced routine of making at least two contacts with passengers. I think the quality of the F FAs on both are very high.
LH's inflight screens are tiny, as are the old F in BA. Also LH has very little English language reading material, maybe a Time or Newsweek in terms of magazines, and it's silly to only give a top on daylight flights. Also edge to BA for having cloth towels in the lavs, however the LH scented hot towel service is a notch above BA.
For me they are both really good products. Perhaps LH needs the FCT concept because of the layout of FRA whereas T5 is really pretty easy to navigate, unless you have to cram on to a bus. My feeling is compared the U.S. carriers neither BA or LH should have much concern in terms of quality.
