Not making any apologies on behalf of, nor defending, AA but they do sell funny fares ex-Europe that it would not normally sell on this side of the Atlantic. If AA did sell a Q fare here a few months ago, it would be eligible for miles trans-Atlantic but no longer is.

I know that S fares are sold ex-Europe on AA.com which are eligible for miles but are not upgradeable. You don't see these sold ex-U.S. (or not that i know of).
