I've done it. The risk is if they reroute you via a different city... they're not obligated to connect you through particular cities on the way to your destination.
So if you are ticketed Orlando-LAX-SJC and plan on hopping off the plane at LAX, they might reroute you MCO-STL-SJC and you'd be in a bind.
