Ferihegy fails in airport security audit
By: MTI
Budapest's international Ferihegy Airport has failed in a recent security audit carried out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in several countries, national daily Magyar Hirlap said on Tuesday.
The National Development Ministry informed airport operator Budapest Airport (BA) last weekend about the EU's related decision that
transit passengers from Budapest will have to be treated at airports in the Schengen zone as if they had arrived from a non-EU country, i.e. before taking another plane, they need to go through another security check. At present ten percent of passengers leaving the Hungarian capital change flights before reaching their destination.
ICAO established that the airport operator had failed to eliminate the air security shortcomings pinpointed by the organisation in a previous audit.
BA said in its latest internal newsletter that some defects had been corrected immediately. The Hungarian authorities, however, admitted that further measures would be required to improve security checks.
BA will have to correct the faults exposed by the audit until December 2010. Should it fail to do so, the case will be brought to the European Court of Justice, the paper said.
