In 1989 my grandfather fell while skiing in France. The final bill was well over $200,000 - this includes the helicopter rescue from the mountain, several weeks in hospital in France, then evacuation back to Australia when he was stable enough to move.
He was left a total quadriplegic, but fortunately the family wasn't forced to sell the family home to pay the bills since he was fully insured.
That was 21 years ago. Costs have gone up a lot since then!
