Verbally abused for using F check in at LGW!

I'll admit we were a tad tiddled from a couple of drinkies off the Strand prior to getting on the Gatwick Express, but only sociably-so. Of course I'd forgotten it's a 45 min check-in limit at LGW so we got to departures with literally 2 mins to spare. There's an enormous queue for economy check-in, but fortunately I've got a shiny card and we're in CE to JER, so straight to the FIRST and CW desks where there's no queue at all and both manned by two nice ladies.
One of the bags gets checked in when I hear a lady with a German accent behind me saying "Sir...if I may call you Sir?". I'm thinking "what's going on", when I'm more interested in getting the bags on as the flight is about to close.

I am then subjected to a tirade: "Sir, if you are a gentleman, it doesn't bother me but I do not wish my son to have to witness such a display of hooliganism. I think you should apologise". Naturally I assume it's someone who's not quite with it, as I'd say you get that in airports, and I ignore it. Nevertheless this lady is persistent, telling me she is absolutely horrified by my behaviour. I struggle to imagine what horrors I am guilty, and of course she tells me that my behaviour will upset her son and she hopes that it does not result in him becoming as bad a hooligan as myself. I ask her what I've done, and she looks aghast and says he honestly cannot believe that I am asking that.

Turns out she is in the economy check in queue and seems not to appreciate that the ladies working the F and CE check in with no customers are not just standing there for the good of their health, and thinks I am just queue jumping. She would not be told or listen to the explanation and continued her tirade. In the end I told her to b*gger off (in German of course), which just confirmed her initial impressions. I felt a bit guilty at losing my temper but I'd just had enough. Check-in assistant was suitably amused though!
Anyone else had this from long-suffering queuing Y pax?
