This restriction only applies to AA Platinum / Executive Platinum members. It does not apply to people with Sapphire/Emerald status on any of the other One World carriers. As a QF Platinum, I get access to the Flagship Lounge ( or Admirals club where not available) even if travelling economy on , say, ORD-STL, plus also receive drinks vouchers.
