This makes tons of sense.

If you have a couple of adults and 1 kid they are likely sitting together. If only one of the adults boards with the kid think of all the room in all those empty seats that you'll have to get the kid organized!

I don't know why people seem to think the plane will leave without them if they don't get on board ASAP.

I generally only preboard if I'm travelling carry-on only or if I'm upgraded - I want the overhead bin space or I want my champagne! If I travel with check luggage I wait in the lounge until the last minute because really if you are going to be sitting in the plane for a few hours why would you want to sit there for any longer than you have to?
