Especially in Europe hotel rooms are often rather small and during our last vacation we got fed up with the hotel room. We apprciate a nice place to hang out, also when the weather is not good (or our mood). And a hotel lobby or bar is not the place that we have in mind. My questions:
How is your experience with renting houses (fincas), flats etc abroad?
What kind of website has good offers with valid (true) description of the homes?
Do you have insight on how to avoid or detect scams, or is this rather uncommon.
Thank you for sharing your insights and experience.

I do this and save tons of money. I can rent a villa/apartment in Florence for about 1500USD per week, compared to a hotel room in which can go about 250 per night for something decent. It's about 250 in savings, sometimes more..but the best part is that you get a much much nicer place..no other guests, full kitchen, living room, space.
Generally, the longer you stay, the better the savings. You may be able to score a decent apartment for a month at 2500, a hotel for that long would be much much more and offer much less. If I am going more than a week I will ALWAYS look for an apartment or house.
Even in Las Vegas it can be cheaper..provided you don't slum it with the lepers Stratosphere or Circus Circus..to get a condo for 1300.
