No, I did not have to pay up.As a platinum I can upgrade into F on an M fare as long as there is Z availability (I think that's the bucket). In fact I had already bought an M fare on my first flight and was cleared into F on that original flight.
That's not gaming the system at all. If there was another plat on and M, or a silver/gold on a B/Y they could have done the same thing. I was just more resourceful and beat them to the punch.
I did all this about 3 hours prior to the flight.
