Let's assume these are the correct upgrade paths for Gold Ambassador.

Club Room (38 sq m) --> Club Premier (52 sq m) (Lounge access)

At the end of the day, both purchases would result in staying in a Premier room (52 sq m). From all the videos that I have dug up in Youtube, the rooms do not look that great compared to newer Crowne Plazas or other IC hotels I have seen. So my dilemma is whether I should pay $60SGP for the lounge access. Anyone have any insight?

I have also heard that you can possibly book a Deluxe room, opt to stay in the deluxe room and get Lounge access in lieu of the room upgrade? Should I do this instead given that the room do not look that nice? I am comparing it to the Pan Pacific rooms, which was very new and clean. The IC ones look dated to me. Anyone else?

Feedback would be appreciated!
Although the rooms are not decorated in a modern style they do have modern amenities ie flat screen TV and ipod dock. In any event, the style of the hotel is more colonial so they try to go for a period look.

Earlier this year we booked a club room and were given club premier. This room suited us very well. Admittedly not the most modern looking but it was well maintained and very comfortable. The bed was easy to sleep on and the lounge suite was handy for eating room service or watching TV. The premier room is a good size and is a decent upgrade for an ambassador.

The club lounge was worth paying for IMO. Didn't get to try the drinks but had breakfast everyday and found the service very good. Although it was self serve buffet the staff would bring us fruit juices and were lightning fast at replacing cutlery and clearing plates. But i've also heard the restaurant in the lobby serves a very good breakfast as well. The lounge was very spacious and was never full when we were there.
