I spent, I did fly long ago, but much of it came from CC churns and other promos. Why, I'm at the point now where Citi actually told me that if I were to cancel the current MasterCard I have now, I could not get another with them. And I have fine credit. they blacklisted me

I haven't been on a business trip for over 2 years now. All my status levels (which include UA1K and Hyatt Diamond) were obtained 100% on my own dime. So what if I have to game the system a bit to get there.
Just tell him that the important thing is not how you get to the promised land, but that you arrive!

I agree, and yet, based on his thinking, YOU would have even more clout because you actually paid to get those points and miles.

Actually, given the very low percentage of miles issued that are actually used, the airline makes more money per issued ticket from your miles than from his buying a ticket.
Gary you know I agree with this. And the key is to be able to earn miles from many avenues, not just one or two. I think he is limiting himself. He should be doing business travel AND signing up for things and churning cards, etc.
