The problem with connecting anywhere is that you turn a 1:15 flight into an 8 hour ordeal. Shanghai is much closer to Taipei than Wuhan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong... pretty much everywhere except for Xiamen.
Back on the topic of miles, DL also works nicely on CI and MU: 20k round trip.
CZ even has direct flights, daily except Tue and Thurs:
Friday, November 19, 2010
Departure: 14:30 Shanghai, China (excl. Hong Kong SAR) - Pudong International, terminal 2
Arrival: 16:10 Taipei, Taiwan - Taiwan Taoyuan International, terminal 2
Airline: China Southern Airlines CZ3095 e Aircraft: Airbus Industrie A321
Fare type: Economy Restricted
1 adult(s) x (1,600 + 287) = 1,887 CNY
Total for all travellers 1,887 CNY
Roundtrip: Returning e.g. Dec, 3: 2,450 CNY

Good deal for me, no?

Don't know how you value your miles, though.
