My liesure travel is also limited by school schedules, so my desired dates tend to be very inflexible. I also need to have my plans set in stone well in advance. If you anticipate that you would be in a similar boat, I think you'll find redeeming your miles to be a very frustrating (or expensive) experience.
FWIW, as a MSP based PM flying mostly very early or very late in the day on deeply discounted coach fares, I'm somewhere between 80 - 85 percent on upgrades.
