I'm taking a quick trip to London in a couple of weeks and flying round trip from Newark (EWR - LHR) on a Sunday morning flight in economy class. The ticket was booked directly on the Virgin website, as yet I haven't input my FF memberships, not sure which one to use - but I guess the Krisflyer no. is best?

Other than being allowed a larger luggage allowance due to the Krisflyer Gold card, are there any other benefits available

eg. which check-in desks are Krisflyer Gold members allowed to use?

Lounge access at EWR and LHR? (I know there isn't a dedicated SIA lounge at Newark)
Donno about the check-in counters for VS when you are a KF Gold, however for any *A lounge access you need to be flying a *A carrier on that day, even your home airline's own lounge.
