To the OP, exit rows actually do make a huge difference, particularly on the 764, where the lav issue isn't as great as it is on the 763. I'm not sure what "select a preferred seat and pay up for your travel partner" means, as your travel partner is entitled to sit in preferred seats on any flight which you also fly.
