Cross Post-Newbie Q: AA or BAEC under "new" rules

Did a search already but nothing came up exactly on point.
The deal- never fly either AA or BA but have a AA# (thought I might need it).
Now I need to fly from U.S. East Coast to CCU direct which leaves BA as the only viable option (cheap and no stops in Middle East).
Q is how can I maximize miles (AA or BAEC or both)?
Here's what I think is correct so far:
If I try to get miles on AA get no miles for transatlantic BA flight.
If BAEC, I can't even sign up for miles/EC unless in a specific class and only get 25% of miles on AA portion in U.S.
Best option seems to be to split up the miles between the two programs but I don't know if I can do this. Any info. advice appreciated. TIA.
