Review: Grand Mercure Hotel Xidan (2010)

All-in, the hotel is a little bland. It has all the trimmings of a great hotel (expect no great bar), but it's just a step or two behind the others. One supposes this is why the property is a Grand Mercure and not higher in the Accor hotel food chain.

Business people should enjoy the property - quiet at night, close to the subway, easy access to the major streets, and not too distant from some tourist attractions and fine dining. Tourists seeking upscale, but reasonable prices, will also like the hotel provided they can get a good rate.

The tour/ concierge desk is well operated and the staff are friendly. Not all speak English, but at least one on duty will. The restaurants serve traditional Chinese food, so those accustomed to American styled Chinese may be in for a surprise. I didn't try the buffet, but I heard good things from other guests.

Don't be afraid to explore the hotel's neighborhood. There is a park nearby where the locals practice dance routines at night as a form of collective exercise, and just walking up and down the streets gives fascinating view into everyday life.

Walking to the Forbidden Palace and Wangfujing, etc is doable, but the subway is easier. Indeed, once you master the subway you'll rely on it more and more.

I'd stay again if the price was right ...
