CR1s can clear at any time -- such as before UDU start. Once the UDU window starts it is beleive there is no advantage of CR1 over UDU -- it is all based on your status.
Once it goes to the UDU window, it does not matter if you use a CR-1 or qualify for UDU. You will clear on the UDU rules.
However, watch out. If you do get upgraded within the window, the system will first "pull" the CR-1 from your account, then within 72 hours, credit it back to you. Most of the time it works but sometimes I've had to call the 1K desk to make it happen.
