That's a good question. Yes, true at 3hrs out V disappears.
In my case I had two segments. I knew the first segment had V class the day prior and was still wide open in first class so figured no problem on gate upgrade. The second segment was more than 3hrs out when I did SDC so its V class was still available, hence I cleared straight into first on that segment.
Having something like ExpertFlyer available is very helpful when making SDC choices, whatever your end goal may be.
