You can convert a reservation from standard miles award to the reduced miles award BEFORE ticketing, as I recently did just that without so much as even a question from the agent. If you wait until after it's been ticketed, your only option would be to redeposit the miles and claim a new award. Hardly worth $100 to save 5000 miles (7500 with some Citi cards).
