What I'm upset about is an inconsistent, invisible policy that they are seemingly only enforcing at LIH. If I knew of the policy, or had it been transparent (say, listed on their website as I printed my boarding pass), I would have just put my head down and paid it. Or I might have been able to better prepare my carry-ons. That wasn't the case.
I'm sitting at the gate now, waiting for my flight, and they've made several announcements to the effect of "if you checked in on-line or arrived via another carrier, you must have a purple bag tag. You bag must weigh under 25 lbs (not 20 as I previously stated)." Likewise, they are weighing bags here, airside...and forcing a mandatory, paid gate-check.
This is a money grab, plain and simple. How could one possibly know about the policy and avoid the fee if they checked in on-line or came from another carrier?
This is a horrid policy.
Also...when and where were the rules made "quite clear" to me, other than by the agent checking me in? There is no way to avoid this fee at LIH.
