Not that this is of personal interest. My kids are past their university years. In the early days, they did get miles on these Z fares.
While I understand your point, I suspect the intent is something different. When I was in University I was way more price conscious than I am now.
I suspect AC might be trying to influence students' future travel habits; and status miles are not necessarily part of the equation. When I was in univeristy, and even in my career since them, I knew many people who would automatically look only at WS for their travel as they automatically assumed that AC would be more expensive. Perhaps AC is trying to entice a generation of younger flyers to form a "habit" of flying (or at least consider flying) AC.
Including GST (if the pass is purchased in AB), the all-in price for a single credit to fly a route such as YEG-YVR is $153.6, which is pretty good considering you can use this over the peak Christmas/New Year's travel time.
