Sorry, I meant "upgraded" to the next level, i.e. Economy Plus or Biz.

I just had a flight this morning.

I got my selected seat from the online check-in but my colleague (who has no status whatsoever) got assigned an E+ seat at the gate. At no time did the gate agent called me to assign me (a *G) the E+ seat and for my colleague to take my pre-selected E seat.

Makes me wonder if I should even bother to check-in online in the first place.
