That is incorrect. If you try to book an F ticket and you are coming up with a YUP fare booked in A inventory, the upgrade is confirmed just as if you purchased an F fare. It does not matter if the fare basis code begins with Y, if there is no A inventory, the fare would not come up.
You also receive the 50% bonus miles and 50% bonus qualifying points for flying one of these fares.

This fare should put you in First Class. If it is otherwise, the booking engine will make it clear to you.
