Why does the TSA need this information? It would seem that investigations are better suited to the FBI.

The TSA should operate metal detectors, x-ray machines, and strip-search machines, nothing more. They need to continue to scan every passenger in any case, so if every passenger is effectively searched then who cares who is traveling? It's yet another example of scope creep and the attendant waste of money.
