A foreign carrier cannot offer transportation between two points in the US. So you can't book just LAS-LAX on KE. You have to continue on...

In November 2000 I took a DL 767 PHX-LAS. It's about 255 miles. That same weekend I took a HA DC-10 LAS-LAX (that continued on to HNL). I was really depressed that I was the only person getting off at LAX.

AA in the past has done DFW-TUL, SAN-LAX, and other short haul flights with DC-10's.
