There's no technical reason why the unblocking can't be done via software. Only possibilities are that:
1. AA doesn't want to implement this software feature
2. AA doesn't want to bare the cost burden of implementing this software feature.

I agree, but the question wasn't why AA is not doing it, but does AA still provide the service? Whether you, or I see other ways of going around it, is not the issue, it's the fact that this perk is GONE!!!
Again, I don't think it's such a big deal anymore anyway. Most flights are full, so you and I could dream about having an empty seat, but the reality is that it won't happen, regardless if the perk was still there or not!
In off-season(winters to Europe, etc.)there will be empty seats, and what we could hope for, is that a TA or GA will take time, when assigning seats and 'The Elites' would be the last ones to loose the empty seat, but I have not seen any evidence of that happening.
