Unfortunately at SFO I see this all the time. If the the credit card prompt comes up at check in and the customer does not have the credit card they will have to purchase a new ticket (at the same original price). The original ticket will be refunded back to the original form of payment.

The thread jhayes_1780 has some valuable info. Best bet is to visit any airport with a UA ticket counter, or RCC. Give them the PNR and the credit card you used, and ask them to remove the credit card requirement from the PNR. I've done it multiple times and it's always worked..
