My HP will run without the battery in place. It will usually run with the battery in place if it is charged.
If the battery is low, forget it. Had better luck with the outlets on the 738s, they seem to have a bit more power.
As suggested, look for the lights. They are really low and very hard to see. If you are in an aisle seat, it will be easier to get up out of the seat and kneel down to see the light.
