Had a recent Glasgow trip and was unsure what would be best, so decided to fly up and train it back.
Outbound on the mid-afternoon flight to get in to take a client for dinner. Office is at Kings X, so took the tube then HEX - through security within 55 minutes, not bad (hand luggage online and checked for the first time using my iphone, including taking advantage of the iphone boarding pass). Silver status showed, and wasn't even asked for my card upon entering the lounge.
Lounge pleasant as ever, did a bit of work and ate lunch. Flight delayed by 45 mins. Seated in 2F, fortunate to have the middle seat kept free on a busy flight. Boarded early enough to avoid any issues stowing my hand baggage, unlike some late comers.
Coming back, got the early afternoon train back from Glasgow, on Virgin trains first class straight through to Euston. 4hr 20mins scheduled time, actual was around 4hr 25mins.
More personal space and free wi-fi makes it an altogether more comfortable and productive journey. Annoyingly they only serve a hot meal out of Glasgow (we'd eaten lunch beforehand) and do not serve anything other than a crappy sandwich, or horrible doorstop style cake as snacks after the first stop. How hard can it be to (re-)heat a microwave meal later on in a journey which only has 4 stops, including the final destination. About an hour and a half before Euston I found myself rather peckish and the Chicken Tikka Massala served as lunch as we pulled out of Glasgow would've hit the spot perfectly.
Plenty of drinks rounds though to compensate!
Into Euston a few mins late at 18:05 or so and home by 18:30.
All-in-all, whilst I prefer flying if I have work to do (or it's likely I will have work to do) I would rather take the train from city-to-city.
It is only recently I have begun to enjoy rail travel - Weekly journeys to Manchester with Virgin have made me see that despite the horrible omnipresent chemical toilet smell, rail travel can be comfortable, quick and good value be it in First, or Standard class.
