Can you book it as a multiple-city trip and pick the flights you want? That's how I'd work around it on united.com if it didn't offer me the connections/flights I am looking for.
Will try that if I still get crazy ITN's with the long layovers when I actually book the trip. There may be some shifting in alliances, flights, etc before next year + the impact of "the merger" that remains to be seen. Wonder if the costs of multiple bookings would be more (or even less!) than a single ITN. Might try a dummy booking to see.
