I live here in Tuscany for much of the year. The terrain is fine for the smallest car. Don't know where you will be, but I live near Montalcino and Pienza on a dirt road and I've even rented a smart car before. There are no mountain passes here unlike other regions of Italy. Tuscany is a fairly large region, with gentle hills and seaside towns. You'll be fine with every type of car.
I will go to the Mall and the Prada Outlet, then drive to Siena and back to Florence with some stops in hamlets along the way. I think I will take A1, SP540, and SR222. Is an economy car enough for these roads?
