The problem is not the people but the layout. If you had tables with trays well back from the xray machine, there wouldn't be a pile up at the door. When I have a 2 carryons (as permitted), a jacket etc and I am carrying a laptop, digital camera, GPS, it's pretty tough to have it all out. I opt for getting prepared by putting all my metal objects including my wallet, watch etc in my carryon before I even get to security.

One of the carryons has all the electronics so it is relatively quick to pull them all out and put them in the tray. No way I am standing in line holding various pieces of electronic gear (ever drop a laptop?).
