I'm a contrarian - I've been a frequent flyer since metal detectors were first installed in airports, and today's backups are certainly not caused by passengers "divesting" (TSA's word for it) at the last second, despite the TSA's insistence and the insistence of lots of frequent flyers.
The massive delays are caused by the sharp and pointy object search, which has dramatically slowed the pace at the checkpoints.
Sure, occasionally I see an infrequent traveler who waits until it is their turn to walk thru the WTMD before emptying their pockets, but very rarely. And since the TSA metal detector guard is purposely slowing everyone down at that point, it doesn't matter if everyone took their laptops out of the case while on the bus in from longterm parking, you're not going to get thru any quicker.
