First, I don't see where your situation has anything to do with American Airlines, and this is posted on an AA forum. Did I miss something?

Generally, though, I believe you misunderstood what they told you.

There are some personal items a carrier will reimburse you for "within" a journey, but not on the home leg. That doesn't have anything to do with the ultimate responsibility for the missing items here.

The claim will be (I do hope you filed one) handled by BA as the last carrier on the return.
