It's pretty typical in ALL markets; you pay a premium for booking way in advance. Except, maybe, for crunch time as the premium days around Thanksgiving etc, where availability eventually evaporates.

Don't even thing about buying something 4 months out; 1 or 2 months out is more like it. Use www.yapta.com to get alerted when the right price is being offered.
