Well, the change fee is $25 on JetBlue and $50 on AirTran. Didnt check Southwest. Airtran will let you deposit the balance of your ticket (minus the $50) to an account that can be applied to your new ticket. I doubt the fares change much on those carriers in most cases. I would add that we dont really know what happened regarding why his wife was staying. It could be anything from the baby was late to the baby had 3 heads. The points I was trying to make were 1) airlines are a customer service business and there is a lot of "penny-wise, pound-foolish" behavior these days and 2) the fare structure of the majors is non-sustainable, and not rational. I think one can agree or not agree with my view on those issues, but I suggest those are the real issues, not the maturity of the phantom grandfather.
