If you can't get the Yukon or Expedition of your dreams for $10 extra and you are stuck with a PT cruiser (this never happens), head for the trailhead anyway. It is a rent-a-car, after all. True Flyertalkers drive rental Crown Vics offroad in Maui.
Lots of bad advise here in my opinion. I have used Priceline many times and sometimes the car rental agency has different car classes available and sometimes they do not. I would not assume that they will have an SUV waiting on the lot for you. I have shown up at ABQ, PWM, and RAP on Priceline reservations. I asked to pay for an upgraded car and there were none available! Also, you shouldn't be driving any car off road. It is bad for the car and voids the insurance.
