actually I beleive it went something like this....example: purchase a coach ticket any price- use 'something' (miles,vipow - don't know about segment stickers) to upgrade to business, and then pay the difference between full fare business (which you got credit for once upgraded to business) and first class to travel in first.
don't have a clue if this still valid - a call to AA would sort this out. Don't even want to guess what the answer is...good luck!
