Other alternative is to request a pass at check-in. I usually am flying C from ZRH and it is automatically given. However, as an AA PLT the first class check-in agents usually honor the request. The "club" they send you to does not have a shower or much more than more comfortable seating, free drinks and internet access terminals, but is after security so only need to go through the gate check.
