I'm British so never been asked in uk but asked in turkey this summer. We also had a problem in Spain- popped out from family home to stay a night in a pre paid rate star wood hotel ( gold and frequently stayed over 20 years). They were insisting that we went back for passports as it was a requirement- they finally accepted drivers licence.
