Checking into a hotel in England with my parents earlier tonight, two strange things happened. I'd like your thoughts.
First (we speak with pretty generic US accents although mine is softer than theirs) the receptionist addressed us several times as "you guys". Maybe I've been living in England too long, or maybe she was trying to be overly familiar, but it did seem quite inappropriate to refer to older folks and their son as "you guys". I was quite surprised at the degree of informality she used.
Second, at the bottom of the "passenger information sheet" it said something like "Non-British Subjects must fill in all passport details as required by law." My dad put his down, but I just ignored it even though I am not a British Subject but rather a British Citizen.
Does the law really require all non-British guests to give their passport details to hotel receptionists? I have stayed at many hotels in this country and have never been asked for them before.
