Looking at the seat map, I am glad to see that both Rows 24 and 25 are now evenly aligned and are both marked as preferred seats - no more non-elites taking the good exit rows on the A/B/C side on the -88s, which is a plus in my book.
If you do not mind the rougher ride as you get further back in the MD-88 not to mention the noise of the JT8D's then be my guess. On shorter flights it was one of the incentives to fly Delta and specifically the MD-88 even if you were not a frequent flier or were above average heightwise. I know seat maps are not a guide, but on lightly loaded MD-88 I have seen exit row seats available even at the last minute because people want to be in the front. I know many people, elite and non-elite, who prefer the D/E seats if they are open close to the front of the plane because of the quieter ride and still good enough legroom
