You don't have to be on the same PNR. As an SE (or E), you can call in and ask them to cross-reference (or some other technical terms) your PNR with your friends' PNRs and they should be able to take those seats. But again, I don't know if there is any limit on the number of people. I've done this for 3 other guys traveling with me but on different PNRs.
