Here's another tip:

If you are leaving your passport in one of the hotel safes (room safe or front desk safe), get the passport out the night before you plan to leave. Once you are back home from your last excursion, and plan to just stay in your room, get your passport in your hands.

The nightmare scenario would be for the hotel to lose power sometime during the night or into the morning, just hours before you have to leave for the airport. If the hotel safe is electrically operated, your passport could be locked in until the power is restored, with no spare time to wait for a locksmith to come and open the safe manually.
